My last birth into the flesh was over three hundred years ago. I have been around much longer than these last few centuries. Though I could go back thousands of years, I only wish to tell you the story of one particular incarnation, that which you might know as the Jersey Devil. It was so long ago when the village people of the coastal New Jersey towns came to call me devil. So many lifetimes ago. To begin at the beginning, I will start the story with my conception, in the year 1736. My father's seed found its mark on the early morning of July twenty-third in Barnegat, New Jersey, not a mile from the edge of the Great Pine Barrens. This date was chosen, as I always like to be born in April.... All of nature is balance. Every grain of sand, every ball of dung, every fly, is needed. War, disease, death, all suffering is, as God wants. There is never any pleasure without some pain, any life without death. Everything in the universe is delicately balance so that life can go on. Earth, wind and fire, all things of nature, whether man judges them good or bad are needed. And this is also true of divine evil. The very nature of evil is balance. It may seem as if evil has tipped the scales in different eras throughout history, or that it has taken reign in various areas of the world, overpowering good, but it remains the same measure always. The pendulum swings as far as it can in the direction of good and then it must swing back, thus marking time on earth. Evil will always be equal to what good there is in the world, never more, never less. Both evil and good are very like quick silver, they flow, break up, and then join back together again as a whole. I remember playing with a bit of mercury as a child. I dropped the silver liquid onto a plate and was fascinated to see it roll around the edges of the dish as I shifted the plate from side to side. I would poke at it with a twig to watch it break up into little balls and then watch enthralled as it joined itself back into one piece. It almost appeared to be a living thing, much like evil. There are those who say that the Jersey Devil is but a figment of imaginations gone wild, a relic of folklore or superstition only to be found in our distant past.
